Advanced Diver Course

What is the PADI Advanced Open Water Course?

The PADI Advanced Open Water Course can be done straight after obtaining an Open Water Diver license from PADI or another recognized scuba diver training agency and is aimed at improving scuba diving skills, introducing new underwater activities and environments, and accelerating a divers experience through a minimum of 5 training dives called PADI Adventure Dives. (See our Open Water & Advanced special!)

The 5 training dives must include Underwater Navigation and a Deep dive, and 3 other PADI Adventure dives. There’s a little studying to do, either with a paper manual or e-Learning, with multiple-choice knowledge reviews for each of the 5 dives and a short intro ‘Thinking Like A Diver’. The studying can be completed after doing the dives, though it’s better done before for a better foundation of understanding.

Here’s a list of popular Adventure Dives that you can do with Patong Dive Center’s instructors:

  • Deep
  • Underwater Navigation
  • Boat Diver
  • Digital Imaging
  • Dive Against Debris
  • Drift
  • Enriched Air (Nitrox)
  • Fish Identification
  • Night Diver
  • Peak Buoyancy
  • Rescue
  • Search & Recovery
  • Underwater Naturalist
  • Wreck

Generally speaking, there’s no pool training required to do your PADI Advanced Open Water. However, because the Adventure Dives are the 1st dive from PADI Specialties, an extra day of pool / shallow water training may be required for elective Adventure Dives such as from the PADI Sidemount Course.

Please note: For special Adventure Dives the instructors must be certified to teach the corresponding specialty and for some there may be an extra charge for additional training and materials such as required PADI Specialty manuals.

Who is the PADI Advanced Open Water Course for?

Anyone with or in the process of doing an Open Water Diver certification, from PADI or another similarly recognized diver training organization, can sign up for the PADI Advanced Open Water Course, however there’s a minimum age limit of 12 years. For ages 12 to 14 years the certification is referred to as Junior Advanced Open Water, for which there’s a depth limit of 21m.

It may be that you want to try a new underwater activity or visit dive sites that weren’t possible as an Open Water Diver. There are many reasons why you may want to become an advanced diver:

  • Improve diving skills
  • Visit new dive sites
  • Dive deeper
  • Get back into diving while
    getting an advanced license
  • Gain more confidence
  • Satisfy self-achievement
  • Want to get into tec diving
  • You aim to be a PADI Pro
and this is a required step

The good news is that the dive theory is simple and the course is more aimed at in-water skill and activity development, with most of the usual Adventure Dives having easily achievable goals. So take that next step and have a great couple of days diving!

What PADI courses to do after becoming an advanced diver?

PADI Adventure dives can usually be counted towards the corresponding PADI Specialty certification. So why not add on a PADI Specialty course or two and with a few extra dives you can take advantage of diving in Phuket, further extending your limits and experience!

Or you can sign up for our PADI Rescue Diver Course (we do a package with EFR Primary & Secondary Care Course too, which is required for the Rescue Diver certification). This certification is necessary if you are thinking about becoming a PADI Pro or a PADI Master Scuba Diver.

The PADI Master Scuba Diver requires you to be a Rescue Diver, with at least 50 logged dives and have 5 PADI Specialties. We’d recommend getting specialty certifications first – they are a lot of fun and you’ll log dives and gain invaluable experience in the process.

Here are a bunch of PADI Specialty Courses that we recommend:

Things you should know about doing your PADI diving license in Phuket

Here are a few helpful reminders of things you should know about diving and doing the Advanced Open Water course:

  • You should allow for 18 hours before flying – after multiple dives / days of diving.
  • You can’t wear spectacles – but you can use contact lenses or one of our presciption masks.
  • General good health is required for scuba diving – you may need a doctor’s medical certificate if you have health issues.
  • Minimum requirement for PADI Advanced Course? (Junior) Open Water Diver level.
  • Advanced Course age limit? PADI Junior Advanced Open Water starts at 12 years old.
  • PADI Advanced Open Water depth limit? 30m maximum (21m for ages 12-14 years).
  • Top tips: take a towel and something to wear under our wetsuits. Use reef friendly sunscreen only on your arms, legs and neck. And do studying in advance to better enjoy your diving days!

Please be kind to the reefs! Enjoy your diving but please also take care to protect the environment. Only use reef friendly sunscreen, don’t throw rubbish into the sea and please don’t feed or touch marine life.

Although being able to dive deeper and enjoy more of Phuket’s dives sites is enough reason in itself to become an Advanced diver, we recommend getting more out of your Advance Open Water Course by doing Adventure dives that of real interest to you or that can be counted towards more useful PADI Specialties.
