What Is The PADI EFR Course?
PADI Emergency First Response Primary & Secondary Care is often referred to as the PADI EFR course, however this is actually 2 courses combined into 1 certification and is required for PADI Rescue Diver. (There are also other EFR courses, such as Care For Children and CPR & AED.)
The Primary Care Course teaches basic techniques for recognizing and maintaining basic life support and the Secondary Care Course teaches basic first aid. Although it is possible to be certified in these separately, as a diver you’ll want the combined certification for the Rescue Diver level.

Skills that the Secondary Care Course covers:
Aside from the skills practice, there’s also a video to watch and a little book work to do – best done in your own time, either with a manual or e-Learning. There is a knowledge review to complete and a final exam for each course, however there’s no ‘passing score’ – it’s more aimed at ‘doing your best’, as you would in a real situation by following your training.
The Emergency First Response Course isn’t just for divers!
We teach you EFR step-by-step.
Who is the PADI EFR Course for?
A PADI Advanced Open Water Diver (or Junior) who’s looking to become a Rescue Diver will need an EFR certification that covers both basic life support and first aid, but the PADI EFR certification isn’t just for divers!
The skills learned can be useful for everyone: particularly for those with aged relatives or family & friends who are often sick or in need of care. CPR and first aid training may even be required for your normal workplace!
When dealing with a serious accident, being able to assist as an ‘Emergency First Responder’ may make the difference to saving someone’s life and limiting future disabilities and recovery time.
As the name suggests, an Emergency First Responder is someone who’s at the scene of an accident and is the first person to help deal with an emergency until Emergency Medical Services arrive to take over. Having basic life support training and even first aid training for illness and minor injuries is hugely worthwhile!
