Rescue Diver Course

About our PADI Rescue Diver Course

The PADI Rescue Diver Course can be taken by anyone with a (Junior) PADI Adventure Diver certification, who has also completed the Navigation Adventure dive. However, it’s more common to have the (Junior) PADI Advanced Open Water certification (or equivalent from a recognized diving agency), prior to starting a Rescue course.

A valid (EFR) Primary & Secondary Care certification (covering basic life support and first aid) is also required prior to PADI Rescue Diver certification. An EFR course usually takes half a day, so with some self-study, the Rescue and EFR courses can be completed within 2 days – Rescue must be done over a minimum of 2 days anyway.

Here’s a breakdown of what the PADI Rescue Diver Course covers:

  • Self-Rescue – dealing with: cramp, disorientation, loss of buoyancy and out-of-air.
  • Recognizing and responding to a tired diver at the surface, including various towing methods.
  • Recognizing and responding to a panicked diver at the surface, including various contact methods.
  • Responding a diver having problems at the surface, including reaching & throwing assists, and also by in-water assists.
  • Recognizing and responding to a distressed diver underwater, including overexertion, out-of-air and a panicked ascent.
  • Locating a missing diver using underwater search patterns, such as an ‘expanding square’ and a ‘u-pattern’ search.
  • Bringing an unresponsive diver to the surface, using buoyancy control of either the rescuer or the diver.
  • Dealing with a non-breathing diver at the surface, including establishing buoyancy, calling for help, giving in-water rescue breaths, towing, equipment removal and exiting the diver.
  • Responding from the boat or shore, to a non-breathing diver at the surface.

Aside from the self-rescue, which may be completed in a pool or similar environment, the other 9 skill components and the 2 final rescue scenarios must be conducted in a ‘real’ diving environment (open water), although the learning of the skills may initially be done in a pool.

The Rescue diver course may be more challenging than other PADI courses but it’s a lot of fun too!

Advanced To Rescue In 2 Days

Who is the PADI Rescue Diver Course for?

Anyone with a PADI Advanced Open Water certification can take the PADI Rescue Diver course. Equivalent certifications from recognized diving agencies are also acceptable, as are Junior levels.

A PADI Adventure Diver certification that includes the Navigation Adventure Dive is also acceptable, however further courses (after Rescue) are more limited for Junior and Adventure Diver levels.

You may simply want to be a more confident diver, or perhaps the Rescue Diver certification is required for other PADI courses you want to take, or it may even be an advantage for your work. Here are a few reasons to become a PADI Rescue Diver:

  • Improves self-awareness & confidence
  • Develop skills for enhanced safety
  • To become a more competent buddy
  • To earn the Master Scuba Diver level
  • Required beyond PADI Tec 40 Diver
  • To be a PADI Divemaster (professional)
  • To become a Public Safety Diver
  • It may be of benefit to other jobs:
Commercial Diver, Marine Biologist or Archaeologist, Aquarium Staff, etc.

The PADI Rescue Diver course is a thoroughly worthwhile course to take, and if your ‘end goal’ is that achievement, then you’ll surely feel very satisfied whilst having a lot of fun on the way!

However, if you are aiming at improving you personal dive skills (the ‘art’of diving), want to extend your limits, or experience new environments & activities, then push ahead with some PADI Specialties / PADI Tec courses!

What PADI courses to do after becoming a rescue diver?

We absolutely recommend to do a bunch of PADI Specialty certifications after doing your Rescue Diver course. Whether you’re looking for new challenges, new activities, getting to some new dive sites, or even going on to be a PADI Pro, specialty dives will be of huge benefit!

And if you have logged 50 dives, along with 5 PADI Specialties and your Rescue Diver certification, we can certify you as a PADI Master Scuba Diver (MSD) for free! As a Rescue Diver, you can also continue on from PADI Tec 40 with Tec 45 & Tec 50 – which also count towards MSD!

If you are a new Advanced Open Water diver, actually we recommend to get some specialty certifications first because they will better prepare you for completing the PADI Rescue Diver Course – and they will still count towards the Master Scuba Diver level.

And if you are thinking about a career in diving, then your next step is PADI Divemaster!

Here are a bunch of PADI course packages that we recommend to do next:

Things you should know about doing your PADI Rescue Diver in Phuket

Here are a few helpful reminders of things you should know about diving and doing the Rescue Diver course:

  • E-Learning is available for Rescue & EFR – get in touch and we can sign you up.
  • You should allow for 18 hours before flying – after multiple dives / days of diving.
  • You can’t wear spectacles – but you can use contact lenses or one of our presciption masks.
  • General good health is required for scuba diving – you may need a doctor’s medical certificate if you have health issues.
  • Minimum requirement for PADI Rescue Course? (Junior) Adventure Diver (with navigation dive).
  • Rescue Course age limit? PADI Junior Rescue Diver starts at 12 years old.
  • Other requirements? You’ll need a current Basic Life Support & First Aid (EFR) certification.
  • How many dives for the Rescue Course? Due to surface skills, descents & ascents, and potentially short dive times, the PADI Rescue Course is logged as a minimum of 2 dives.
  • Top tips: take a towel and something to wear under our wetsuits. Use reef friendly sunscreen only on your arms, legs and neck. And do studying in advance to better enjoy your diving days!

Please be kind to the reefs! Enjoy your diving but please also take care to protect the environment. Only use reef friendly sunscreen, don’t throw rubbish into the sea and please don’t feed or touch marine life.

With the Rescue Diver course, you may be pretending to be an unresponsive diver, you’ll be removing equipment, and you may even be exiting the water on a shore, so please take extra care not to damage your environment – thank you!
